That was an incredible ki. Was it Piccolo? Or Vegeta?” Note: obviously it wasn't either, but it might be notable that Goku at least felt it conceivable that Piccolo did it. Initial Freeza may be a little too easy for him.

He thought that the one who defeated him and become so incredibly strong was Piccolo or Vegeta, because he never knew Trunks. Thats it. Piccolo did not train much in the one year time when namek exploded. So I have him around Vegeta post heal dende. Vegeta there is around Goku (post Ginyu zenkai).

Posts: 160 Group: Suspended Member #8,890 Joined: January 20, 2013	regardless of what goku might lead you to believe, picollo at that point was far away from having enough in him to get the job done obviously. even after training his ***** off for years it's doubtful he'd be capable of making short work of freezer like trunks showed as the android he whooped still couldn't hold a candle to freezer.

He never felt Mecha Freeza's Full Power, so Freeza was never giving off his true power for Goku to sense. Meaning that the last Full Power he felt was 100% Freeza(organic); he thinks it's a possibility of one of them handling him, so I think he was meaning that. Training with Gohan, who was a Super Saiyan, easily has him above first form Freeza.
